Cleaning Methods

House Washing vs. Pressure Washing: What's the Difference?

Same hose. Very different jobs. Here's how to tell which one your home actually needs — and why using the wrong method can damage siding, paint, and shingles.

House washing and pressure washing get used as if they mean the same thing. They don't. Confusing them is one of the most common reasons exterior cleaning jobs go sideways — chipped paint, dented siding, voided shingle warranties, and water driven into wall cavities.

Pressure Washing: High Pressure for Hard Surfaces

Pressure washing uses high-pressure water — usually between 1,500 and 3,000 PSI — to physically blast dirt off a surface. The water itself does the cleaning work through sheer mechanical force. That makes it the right tool for concrete driveways, brick pavers, stone, and other surfaces engineered to take real impact.

House Washing: Usually Means Soft Washing

When professionals talk about "house washing," they almost always mean soft washing — low pressure combined with a cleaning solution that breaks down algae, mildew, and biological staining at the chemical level. Instead of trying to blast the stain off, the solution kills the organism causing the stain. The result rinses off gently and stays cleaner longer.

Why Pressure Washing the Wrong Surface Is a Problem

  • Vinyl siding: high pressure can force water behind the panels, leading to hidden mold and rot inside the wall cavity
  • Painted wood trim: high pressure strips the paint film and raises wood grain, accelerating peeling
  • Asphalt shingles: high pressure removes the protective granule coating — sometimes voiding the roof warranty
  • Soft brick and stucco: the surface can erode and pit under high-PSI water

A clean exterior with chipped siding or stripped roof granules isn't a win. The right method depends on the surface, not the dirt level.
