Gutter Exterior Cleaning: What "Tiger Stripes" Really Are

House washing usually skips the gutters. That's why the dark streaks down the face stay there even after a fresh wash — they need a different chemistry.

You've probably seen the dark, vertical streaking that runs down the face of gutters — sometimes called "tiger stripes." They appear even on gutters that get cleaned out regularly, and a house washing usually leaves them behind. That's because they're a different kind of staining than what's on your siding, and they need a different approach.

What's Actually on Your Gutters

Gutter tiger stripes are a mix of:

  • Oxidation — the natural breakdown of the aluminum or steel surface coating
  • Atmospheric grime — road dust, pollen, and pollution that collects on the most exposed face of the home
  • Biofilm — a thin layer of bacteria, algae spores, and organic residue that bonds to the oxidized surface
  • Water-flow staining — mineral deposits left behind as rainwater repeatedly runs over the same paths

Standard soap-and-water rinse doesn't lift any of that. The oxidation layer in particular is the foundation everything else clings to, and it requires a specialty gutter cleaning solution.

How Gutter Exterior Cleaning Works

Professional gutter exterior cleaning applies a specialty solution to the face of the gutter, allows it to dwell long enough to break the bond between the staining and the surface, then is agitated with a soft brush and rinsed. The process restores the original color of the gutter face — often startlingly so, especially on white gutters.

Not the Same as Cleaning the Inside

Gutter interior cleaning means clearing leaves, debris, and clogs from inside the trough so water drains properly. Gutter exterior cleaning means removing the staining from the visible face. Both matter, both are worth doing, and they're separate services. House washes usually include neither — ask about both when you get an estimate.

A house wash without gutter cleaning is the most common reason people say "my house still doesn't look quite right." Clean gutters make the whole wash pop.

How Often

Gutter exterior cleaning is generally a once-a-year service for most homes. Heavy tree cover or coastal proximity can accelerate buildup. H2O Power Washing can add it to your annual house wash for a single appointment — call (224) 789-0290.
